  6. Synopsis No one gets in without being asked.
And with her untamable hair, large
forehead, and gawky body, Tookie De
La Crème isn’t expecting an invitation.
    Modelland—the exclusive, mysterious
place on top of the mountain—never dares to make an appearance in her
dreams. But someone has plans for Tookie.
Before she can blink her mismatched
eyes, Tookie finds herself in the very
place every girl in the world obsesses
about. And three unlikely girls have
joined her. Only seven extraordinary young
    women become Intoxibellas each
    year. Famous. Worshipped. Magical.
What happens to those who don’t
make it? Well, no one really speaks of
that. Some things are better left unsaid. Thrown into a world where she
    doesn’t seem to belong, Tookie
glimpses a future that could be hers—
if she survives the beastly Catwalk
    Corridor and terrifying Thigh-High
Boot Camp. Or could it? Dark rumors like silken threads swirl around the
question of why Tookie and her new
friends were selected . . . and the
    shadows around Modelland hide
sinister secrets. Are you ready? Modelland is waiting
    for you. . .

  8. Tyra Banks was 15 years old when she started modeling, the same age as Tookie De La Crème, the main character in her debut fantasy novel,
    Modelland. After establishing a
supermodel career, Tyra tackled the world of television, creating the hit
show America’s Next Top Model, which is seen in more than 170 countries, and her two-time Emmy-award-winning Tyra Talk Show, to
become the super businesswoman she always wanted to be. Tyra is a
leading voice in empowering girls and is dedicated to expanding the definition of beauty worldwide. She invested five years in conceiving and writing her first book of fiction,
Modelland, published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. Her lifelong
love of reading and story telling is deeply embedded in every page.

Tyra Banks will visit Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave., in Naperville, on
Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss and distribute autographed
copies of this teen fantasy novel. The program, sponsored by Anderson’s Bookshops, is also being hosted by North Central College as part of the
college’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. Tickets, which include a signed copy
of Modelland and admission to the program, are required and available for $25 at Anderson’s Bookshop, 123
    W. Jefferson Ave., in downtown Naperville., (630) 355-2665. Modelland is intended for young adult
readers, ages 12 and up, and tells the story of Tookie De La Crème, a 15-year-old aspiring model. With her untamable hair, large forehead, and
gawky body, Tookie De La Crème isn’t expecting an invitation to Modelland
—the exclusive, mysterious place on top of the mountain. But Modelland, as ideal as it first sounds, is so elusive that
it never even dares to make an
appearance in her dreams. But someone has plans for Tookie.
Before she can blink her mismatched eyes, Tookie finds herself in the very
place every girl in the world obsesses about. And three unlikely girls have joined her. Only seven extraordinary young women become Intoxibellas each year. Famous. Worshipped. Magical.
What happens to those who don’t make it? Well, no one really speaks of that. Some things are better left unsaid. Thrown into a world where she doesn’t seem to belong, Tookie glimpses a future that could be hers—if she survives the beastly Catwalk
Corridor and terrifying Thigh-High Boot Camp. Or could it? Dark rumors like silken threads swirl around the
question of why Tookie and her new friends were selected . . . and the
shadows around Modelland hide sinister secrets.

Tyra Banks is visiting thanks to her publisher, Random House, and Anderson’s Bookshops, a business
specializing in book sales, author events, book signings, and building a sense of community, learning and fun. The store has been helping Naperville readers for six generations. In 1878,
Oswald’s Pharmacy began selling books as a service to customers. So successful was that side of the business that it became an independent entity in 1964. Based in downtown Naperville, the
store has grown with the community ever since. A second location is also
open in downtown Downers Grove, at 5112 Main Street, (630) 963-2665. In 2009, Anderson’s expanded again with the opening of a gift shop, Two Doors East, located at 111 W. Jefferson Ave. in Naperville. Key to Anderson’s success has been special author events, like the
Thursday, September 15 program with Tyra Banks. For more information, please call Anderson’s Bookshop at

  9. Supermodel and library lover Tyra
Banks stopped by our landmark 42nd
    Street building this morning, talking
with us about how “libraries are
    insanely important.” Banks, who
follows us on Twitter and wrote parts of her upcoming young adult novel Modelland in our Rose Main Reading Room, said, “The library is such a great
equalizer. It doesn’t take money. You
can have access to anything and
everything in the world and get that
    knowledge and that entertainment for
free. Especially in our economy right now, with things being expensive and
people being laid off and families
having issues, to be able to come to
the Library … that’s kind of amazing.”
She added that the Rose Main Reading
Room (where she’s pictured in this photo by NYPL’s Jonathan Blanc) “is
just insanely gorgeous,” and said, “I
would just look up and be inspired. I
think this branch actually made me
    dream bigger and my imagination
flowed. There were no boundaries because the room was so
inspirational.” Tyra - who is currently
reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - also uses our Mid-Manhattan Library sometimes, and said when she
walked into the Inglewood Public Library in California as a kid, “I almost felt like it was giving me a hug.” Very
sweet! Thanks Tyra! Her book comes
out in September - get it in a library
    near you.
